by Way of the Past
Our charge is to present Weston’s illustrious Black History, from pre-Civil War, Emancipation, and Reconstruction through to the turn of the century, and their great flight from Weston in a palatable and engaging but thorough way. We will do this with love. In the spirit of love, we are pursuing an accurate account, with the hope that all people who encounter our work will fall in love with Weston’s little-known History and love the fact that now, we as a community are ready to deepen our understanding of Weston’s History as a whole.
Founded to reveal, restore, and include the lives and stories of Weston, Missouri’s forgotten forebears who made up a third of her population, the Black Ancestors Awareness Campaign’s purpose is to bring about a sense of belonging and community for Weston’s people of African Descent.
The Black Ancestors Awareness Campaign is proud to be a Standing Committee of the Weston Historical Museum.
Faces in the Mural: Their Names, Their Stories
Coming Soon to 400 Blackhawk Street
This interpretive sign will soon be installed beside the Weston Black Heritage Mural at the newly paved Weston Shuttle Stop. Part of the Museum Without Walls initiative and the City of Weston’s beautification project, this landmark will soon be celebrated with a citywide ribbon-cutting dedication. The realization of this new Museum Without Walls permanent art exhibit has been a long-term goal for us and our mission of celebrating Weston’s resilient Black history. In addition to a scene illustrating the role of Black people in local agriculture - from hemp to tobacco - the mural recognizes four significant Black residents of Weston through the years -

This collection exists to make primary source documentation accessible for genealogists, descendants, scholars, and the community, facilitating truth-telling and restorative history. Reading early legal transactions and municipal records that commodify human beings carries an emotional weight. Visitors are encouraged to explore at their own pace.

Founded to excavate Weston’s Black lineage from obscurity, the Black Ancestors Awareness Campaign meticulously reintroduces the lives, histories, and contributions of Weston’s resilient Black community by increasing permanent exhibits and yearlong programs, promoting Weston’s Black forbears, whose unpaid labor, talent, and industry still resonate and enhance the value, legacy, and charm of historic Weston.
